In September the nation celebrates active travel – Wednesday 13th is Cycle to Work Day and Car Free Day is on Friday 22nd – and it’s a time to celebrate those already getting around under their own steam and to encourage others to give it a go for the first time.
What are the benefits?
Swapping the car for an everyday activity such as walking or cycling is an effective way to improve your health. Leaving the car at home every now and then is also a simple way to build physical activity into your daily routine – you could also save time, money and help the environment at the same time!
What support is available?
There are free and local services open to anyone who wants help getting started or help to keep going. If you’re considering walking or cycling then the Greenwich Healthy Living Walking and Cycling pages are a great place to start. Here you will find information on:
- Free cycle training
- Regular led walks
- Local recreational bike and/or walk maps

Are your bike maintenance skills not quite up to scratch? Anyone can drop in to a Dr Bike session. Sessions take place at locations across the borough where mechanics are on hand to carry out small repairs and share maintenance tips free of charge! Pop along for the next session on:
- Thursday 28th September between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm at Eltham High Street/Passey Place.
Families are invited to pick up a bike and get started during Thamesmead Festival with these FREE exciting activities planned:
- Saturday 16th September – Learn to Cycle sessions, 12 pm – 5 pm at The Link Thamesmead, Bazalgette Way, SE2 9BS
- Sunday 17th September – Family Bike Maintenance workshops, 10 am – 12 pm and Introduction to Road Cycling, 12.30 – 2.30 pm both at Parkview Hub, 212-214 Yarnton Way, DA18 4DG
